Chapter 11

Two weeks after Cube died, my pops met his maker. I knew for a while that he was in poor health. Mom use to visit him from time to time when he was stationed on the same floor as her in the hospital. She wanted me to come up there and say my good-byes, but my ego wouldn't allow me to. It was ‘Fuck that dude’, in my eyes. He finally passed, and at the time it was like a relief. Mom came into my room and said with pain in her words.

“Jameel I’m sorry to tell you this but your dad passed this morning.”

I barely looked in her direction. “Okay.”

She didn't really care for my dad either, but she felt I needed to be more interested than I was.

“Well, if you need to talk, just let me know.”

“Talk about what? I don't fuck with dude, plain and simple.”

Later on, my mom called me up to her room. “Are you going to his funeral on Friday?”

“For what?”

I was really trying to see what the big deal was about trying to connect me to this stranger. My mom didn't let my anger disturb her.

“Well, I think you should go. You don't want to look back and think you missed out on an important moment to say good-bye to your father.”

In my mind, the answer was still a no but later on that week, my mom made me go. My grand pops picked me up and together we went to see my pops one last time. I didn’t really hate my dad. Deep in my heart, I knew he loved me beyond what words could express. I just had a disdain for weakness, and to me there was nothing weaker than letting drugs allure you from the open arms of your kid.
